On 13 March 2024, lawmakers in the European Parliament approved by majority vote a new law to regulate AI systems, the first-ever legal framework on artificial intelligence. The Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute, member of CataloniaBio & HealthTech, opens a new lab with the incorporation of Dr. Vincenzo Calvanese, a consolidated researcher on stem cell biology. The new group will try to understand which molecular features and regulatory processes identify a blood stem cell, a fundamental knowledge to advance in many areas, like haematopoietic stem cell transplant, one of the few successful clinical applications of stem cells today.

Professionals from the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona shared the clinical needs they have identified in their daily work in paediatric care with around sixty attendees from around thirty companies and start-ups from CataloniaBio & HealthTech and the sector. It was held on the afternoon of Tuesday 9 April at the Auditori Plaza de l'Hospital Sant Joan de Déu.

The Catalan biotechnology company GoodGut, part of the HIPRA group and a member of CataloniaBio & HealthTech, has developed a solution to improve the detection of alterations in the intestinal microbiota. It has published the results of a clinical study demonstrating that the use of its test in colorectal cancer screening reduces false positives by 20%. This would contribute to a better optimization of the available resources in the healthcare system, as it would reduce the number of unnecessary colonoscopies and avoid the discomfort of undergoing this procedure if it is not strictly necessary.

The Josep Carreras Institute (IJC), member of CataloniaBio & HealthTech, has received the provisional resolution of accreditation as a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. The IJC is one of the 10 institutions that have received accreditation in the 2023 call, placing it among the best research centers in the country based on excellence, scientific contributions, talent attraction capacity, and economic and social impact, among others.

More than forty CEOs and managers of CataloniaBio & HealthTech met on Tuesday 20 March at the first edition of the CEO Council of 2024. The meeting was held at the HUB Cambra Digital, at the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and the special guest was Oriol Pinya, president of SpainCap, co-founder of Abac Capital and vice-president of Barcelona Global and FemCat. The welcome was given by Mariona Serra, CEO of GoodGut (a company of the HIPRA group) and President of CataloniaBio & HealthTech.
